Hi Mike, To the best of my knowledge your information is true. One of the founders of "Illustra" is the Famous Dr. Stonebreaker from UC Berkley. He was involved with the Ingres project in UC snd founded the "Ingres" Corporation. The Postgres project was to add support for more data types (video , text) on top of a relational engine. I am sure the work that the Illustra engine has its origins in this project. They paid over 200 million for Illustra. This move is in direct response to the Oracle 7.3 Universal server. Yes you can download Postgres probably free of charge. However Will it perform ? Where is the support for it ? Who will help you if your data gets corrupted? No one in the "real" corporate world will ever trust their most valuable asset (The Corporate data) in the hands of a database produced as a "University Project".
