informix socket protocol - any details known?

HP K260 4-way HP-UX 10.20 IDS 7.31.UC2 Are there any details available re: the informix socket protocol? For various reasons, I am interested in whether it is possible to query my Informix database by directly connecting to the appropriate server socket (port) w/ my own code, *without* using any Informix tools (ESQL, JDBC, etc...) Any thoughts appreciated. Allen
