Add new SAP application server
Posted in 2007
A SAP Basis admin wanted to add a new HP-UX 11.23 IA64 application server while keeping the existing HP-UX PA-RISC Informix 7.31 database, and asked which I-Connect/CSDK release to use and whether a newer client can talk to an older server. Replies confirmed newer CSDK/I-Connect clients (then 3.00.xC2) can connect to a 7.31 server, and that for SAP you should install the I-Connect version the SAP kernel was built with (see SAP note 115619). The thread then drifted into complaints about IBM's confusing CSDK download site, with Andreas Breitfeld posting a direct no-charge download search URL and step-by-step instructions (a free IBM ID, not Passport Advantage, is enough), though the newest Windows versions still weren't findable that way.

Dear all, We plan to add new application server in our SAP landscape. Our DB server run in HP-UX 11i PARISC INFORMIX 7.31. And the new application server is HP-UX IA64 11.23. We do not want to upgrade the database release because we just want to add application server. I check at SAP Compatibility matrix that HP-UX 11.23 IA64 is only suuported for INFORMIX 64 BIT UNIX 10.00(EQ FC4) or INFORMIX 64 BIT UNIX 11.10(EQ FC1). But I'm sure, since we just want to add the apps server, we just need iconnect install in that new Apps (cmiiw). My question is: 1. What's the version/release of Iconnect in Informix 10.00 and Informix 11.10? 2. Can database client (using Iconnect) from upper release connect to lower database release (Informix 7.31)? Thanks a lot in advance, Regards, Adrian Maulana SAP Basis

The correct IConnect version to install is dependant on your SAP kernel version and OS . you need to install the IConnect which was originlly used to build the SAP kernel. See SAP note 115619 as a reference. > 2. Can database client (using Iconnect) from upper release connect to lower > database release (Informix 7.31)? Yes, that is possible. HTH Tilman
Hi Sheshnarayan, Thanks for posting the link to the Informix Client SDK software. HOWEVER, I just wanted to add that anyone who is not intimately familiar with the convoluted IBM web site for Informix products, especially for downloads of them, had better prepare themselves for a couple of hours of frustration and meandering through the site trying to find the software. I have been using Informix and the CSDK bundle for years so I am fairly used to this weird process of getting a CSDK port, but for the beginner let me outline it: - go to the site whose link is below - then you will find a small link on the lower right of the page for Informix CSDK downloads, but the downloads are under the heading of "Trials and Demos"??? As long as I can remember IBM has been labeling this client software under some misleading category making you think that it is a purchased product but it has actually been free. In fact, there is even a link on this page to ordering and sales information for it. - when you click on the CSDK Downloads link, you will get to a page "Trials And Demos", for all IBM and Informix downloads, where: -- the Search Engine to locate CSDK does not work -- when you click on the Products Tab, CSDK is not listed -- you have to click on a link on the right called "More Featured Trials" -- on that page, CSDK will not be shown so you have to click the link at the bottom "View All Evaluation Software" -- on the next page you will need to use the Search box and enter "Informix Client SDK" -- that will bring up all of the ports of it (I think) -- then when you select the port you need by clicking on the description (my HPUX PA-RISC 64-bit port is listed as for the Sun Operating System!) -- up comes a page with the huge heading "Trial Download" (again referring to the HPUX port I selected as being for Sun O.S.) -- then you click the Continue link and GUESS WHAT? -- that takes you to a page to login to Passport Advantage -- So, unless you are a IBM Passport Advantage Customer, you can't get the download and you are out of luck -- If you are a PA Customer, the next page brings up a ridiculous survey which you must answer to get the download. None of the questions were of a topic relevant to us and I just had to answer the questions with anything in order to get the download. -- when I viewed the License Agreement, it said that it was for temporary evaluation for 90 days In short, I feel that the product information and downloading steps for Informix CSDK are very obfuscated and confusing. If anyone from IBM reads this and wants to correct me or clarify something regarding what I have said, I would appreciate it. Please try following steps to download Informix Client SDK for HP-UX: 1. http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/download/nochargesearchquery.jsp 2. Search for: client sdk hp risc 64 --> Search 3. --> Informix Downloads (IBM Informix Client SDK V2.90.FC4 for HP-UX PA-RISC 11.00, 64-Bit) 4. enter or create your IBM ID (this is a free account, no PA) 5. answer the the questions with the red star agree the licence terms --> I confirm 6. --> Download using http --> Download now Hope this works. Hi Andreas, This helps. It is quicker to get to the CSDK downloads than going through any of the other pages that I have seen. Also, I did not realize that you could get the IBM ID necessary for the download without having to have PA (although we do have PA for our IDS entitlements). But there is something strange. The search page, titled "No charge products, tools, and toolkits" will not pull up the most recent version for Windows XP which is 3.00.TC1, or the previous version 2.90.TC4R1. I have to click on "Trials and Demos" under "Downloads" in the left panel of the window and do the search in that page in order to find the most recent versions. The most recent version that can be obtained for Window XP from the page that provide below is 2.81.xx. What is up with that?????
