This bug was originally fixed in 4.10.UE1 by having the screen clear everytime (irrespective of whether you had a window open). This caused problems (as it has for you), and caused the fix to be backed out. It was backed out to the original behavior in some versions of 4.11, and I believe all versions of 4.12.
