I've seen individual queries drop from minutes to sub-second response. I wrote a shell script (ftp://ftp.iiug.org/pub/informix/pub/mkupdstats.gz) to generate the current recommended update stats commands for you, it doesn't require Perl or ESQL/C. If you have perl or ESQL/C, you might prefer upd_stats or utils*_ak, respectively. Try one of them.
