Running on HP 7.0/HP 8.0, Informix versions 4.10UE4/4.10UG2 we had continued back-end growth. Through some hard work on their part, we discovered that a bug occurs when you do an order by, but then read only one row [although it appears that if you read any amount less than all, this bug will occur]. We've received an experimental fix, that does not exhibit this problem, so a solution is known [for availability, check with support]. Thanks to all involved at Informix for resolving this problem. Here's their formal description of the problem: Bug 15355: BACKEND GROWTH: SRTMRGSET IN SORT PACKAGE SHOULD FREE RUN STRUCTS It appears that the bug exhibits itself only when an application executes a sort-merge query, but fails to fetch all the rows returned by the query. If the application fetches all the rows, then the space for the run structs gets free'd. ---------------------------
