I think he can do it. Create three instances on a same box.
Create one root dbspace. Set the path to the same root dbspace.
You should be able to bring the engine up one at a time with the same
dbspace.
This is working fine as long as we use the same version of informix server.
The different versions also works as long as there is no data conversion
problems.

You can't really do it. You might be able to directly alter the header
information of your rootdbs and chunks, but you'd really need to know what
you're doing. You might be able to do something clever with chroot.
In my opinion (but from previous correspondence on the newsgroup, in no-one
else's!) this is a major failing of IDS.
HPL or onunload is your best bet.
