RE: XPS 8.1
Posted in 2008
A DBA inherited an unsupported single-node Informix XPS 8.1 instance that suddenly became slow for loads, queries and reports, and asked how XPS differs from IDS and which diagnostic commands to use. Replies noted XPS is a different product, suggested 'xctl onstat -' to check co-servers, confirmed dbaccess is included, and said onutil replaces oncheck/onspaces (with 'onutil help ...' for syntax) — though on 8.1 those help commands failed, and the responder could only paste CHECK INDEX syntax from a newer release. No cause or fix for the slowdown is recorded in the thread.

To All: I have just inherited an Informix XPS 8.1 instance. I believe that the plan was to eventually migrate away from it, so no upgrades were ever done and it is no longer supported. It has been running along fine up until about a week ago. All of a sudden, data uploads, queries and reports are taking a lot longer than they used to. I have not yet checked, but I was told that UPDATE STATISTICS and possibly index rebuilds have been done on a regular basis. Having not worked with XPS before, how does it differ from IDS and what are the diagnostic steps that I should go through to find the possible problems? Are they the exact same commands as IDS or different? Larry
These are totally different beasties. do you have a single node XPS
instance? Or are you running multiple co-servers?
xctl onstat -
will give you the status of each co-server, if you have more than one,
then your upgrade path is not so simple.
I would also figure out why things have gotten slow rather than shoot
the workhorse, maybe it just has a pebble in it's shoe.

There is just a single node. I was hoping for some commands, etc. that I could
run on the XPS server to possibly determine the problem. Also, does XPS come
with dbaccess that I could use to drop and rebuild some indexes? How do I
check the indexes?

yes, it has dbaccess
plane to catch - more later.

Larry,
The onutil command replaces oncheck, onspaces, etc., at least in XPS
8.51. Try running "onutil help". That will show you the options that are
available with onutil. Then you can run "onutil help check index", for
example, to see specific syntax.

Hmm, well, I don't know if onutil works the same on your version, but here
is the syntax output from running oncheck help check index:
CHECK INDEX [WITH DATA] <index_target> [LOCK] [<display_option>]
Where <index_target> is one of the following:
<database>#[<owner>.]<index>
IN DATABASE <database>
IN TABLE <database>:[<owner>.]<table>
IN TABLESPACE <partnum>
And where
<partnum> can be either a table or index partition number.
LOCK forces a share lock on the table.
<display_option> is DISPLAY | SAVE [IN "filename"]
Examples:
CHECK INDEX sysmaster#idxname DISPLAY
CHECK INDEX IN DATABASE sysmaster SAVE IN "/tmp/check.out"
CHECK INDEX IN TABLE sysmaster:systables
Note: "WITH DATA" option not supported with "IN TABLESPACE"
clause
