RE: Informix Archives with BCV
Posted in 2008
Hi Tim,
in addition to what others have said:
The informix commands are: onmode -c block, (split your BCV), onmode -c
unblock
We used to do this all the time for database copies to test systems
(informix 9.4, sun solaris 2.9, onbar <-> netbackup). Block production
db, split BCV, unblock production (that took about ...oh maybe 5 seconds
max)... Then we'd disk copy the BCV onto the test system disks and start
informix (a little more complex than that if you want the test system to
be named differently,etc).... Actually most times we didn't bother with
the informix block/unblock because it was going to a test system.
Informix 99.999999% of the time came up fine after this (I call it a BCV
rip). On the very rare occasion that it failed, we'd just sync the BCV &
rip it again or we'd actually block/split/unblock. doing what we did
(rip BCV without informix block/unblock) is unsupported so we only did
it in cases where we didn't worry about having to call in the big guns.
I think the onbar restore is done with a "-e" to indicate the backup had
been external. We often took BCV splits for DB backups before project
go-lives as they were much faster than waiting for the 4+ hour backup
(of course in this case we did block/unblock informix). But we rarely
restored the BCV backup back to source.
Maybe once I rolled logs forward after a BCV restore, but I barely
remember. We tested quite thoroughly before using BCVs with onbar, we
had no problems.
Informix Onbar & netbackup & EMC BCVs work very well together! So well
that sometimes I actually hoped for a problem so I'd have something
really fun to do :-)
I say go for it, you will like it.

Does anyone have any 1st hand experience of using OnBar in conjunction
with BCV. Have you run a restore? Did it work OK?

Colin
