RE: Your opinion on D4GL
Posted in 2000
D4GL is not a entirely new project it is actually a product produce in France/Germany by Four J's, Informix just sell it on , like they did with Informix Menu's (a Fourgen Product) and a few more Fourgen products(then dropped them and lefted the people who brought then in the S***). If you are looking at Version 2 of D4GL , then it will look like a char. app. thru a gui, when compared to a true windows program. BUT if you are using Version 3 of D4GL and use the "tcl3" files then the application does look a lot more like a window program. (Cut,Paste,Copy keys all work), the interface running on the Win9x client will use the setting for color etc.. defined for that PC. their are some short falls: Only DDE and not OLE (we have DDE working to Word 97 and 2000) NO drop down menu's. SOme more but minor. One BIG plus (Informix will hate me for this), Version 3.02.XX can access an Orcale/MS-SQL-server or IBM DB2 database. We always consider the following as well: 1. What is the existing skillset of the development team? If the main skillset is Informix 4GL, I would go with D4GL. 2. What are the client/server technical requirements? If "thin-client" technology is desirable (a big plus if remote clients are involved), then D4GL would again be preferable. 3. What are the business/end-user requirements for the new system? If it is light on the database I/O, do not mind "thick-client" problems, do not care too much about being able to seamlessly integrate SQL in the programs like D4GL/I4GL allow you to do, then perhaps another "true" GUI tool (e.g. Visual Basic, Visual C++, Powerbuilder, etc.) would be better. 4. If the "dot com" hype is important, then it is hard to argue against Java... Good luck, Hal Maner M Systems International, Inc.
