Database engine performance comparisions

Hi! You will most likely get some more detailed info from people that have both types of engines installed and in operation right now. The main difference is that Online is tuneable and SE is not. Also SE does not require maintenence (sometimes for years) and Online should be operated by a DBA. Sometime ago we switched to Online where performance of DELETE became not acceptable - it took 30 sec to save an order. Online accomplished this in 3 sec. For modern multiprocessor hardware go with Online. Or try both if you can - ask your Informix rep for eval copies. We run the same systems on SE and IDS. For simple selects, I would put the threshold at 100,000 rows if indexed, 50,000 if not indexed, assuming the number of users remains low. Anything beyond a simple select, IDS does better after a few thousand rows. When SE deletes from the master table of a referential integrity constraint, it just takes forever. I think of SE as providing the same performance level as MS Access (OK, maybe slightly better), but with more features. No ideas about universal server, but my understanding is that IDS2000 is IDS7 with universal server extensions, or is it the other way around? In any case, as of IDS2000, you cannot differentiate between IDS and Universal. -- Bashar Chalabi CTL, London Torquil Gault <torquil@rabbit.com.au> wrote in message news:38886732.714BB9AA@rabbit.com.au... > Hi, > > I have been looking for some documentation that would give me a > 'general' comparision between the various informix database engines ie. > if you had a 40,000 row table how long would it take to select using > SE/Online & UniversalSever. > > If anyone know of such a thing, could you email me please. > > Many thanks in advance, > > Torquil >
Hi, I have been looking for some documentation that would give me a 'general' comparision between the various informix database engines ie. if you had a 40,000 row table how long would it take to select using SE/Online & UniversalSever. If anyone know of such a thing, could you email me please. Many thanks in advance, Torquil

You have it right. IDS.2000 (& Foundation.2000) is 7.30 with the UDO extensions built in. Informix reports that for PURE RDBMS tables and operations IDS.2000 is 15-25% faster than IDS 7.31 and for UDO operations it is considerably faster than UDO 9.14 which is based on the older 7.1x code base (7.2x, 7.30 and 7.31 each improved IDS performance which 9.1x did not take advantage of). In any > case, as of IDS2000, you cannot differentiate between IDS and Universal. Welllll, unfortunately the source merge between IDS 7 and UDO 9 took Informix so long that the 7.31 product had to be coded separately so IDS.2000 does not have any of the newer 7.31 features. Art S.
