In version <=4 : you could pass as many arguments as you wanted, and it would let you, : regardless of how many the other program expected. In version >= 5 : you MUST pass in the correct number, or you will get a runtime error. Well, no. There isn't a version 5 4GL at all. I believe you're thinking of 4GL version 4.10. Version 4.10 4GL added a lot of error checking that wasn't done in 4.00. This caused a lot of errors (such as number of arguments) to get returned that hadn't been returned under 4.00. In the later versions of 4.1x (I'm not sure when, 4.10.UE1 or 4.11 on), much of this error checking was moved to the WHENEVER ANY ERROR option so that you could turn it on (using the ANY ERROR or -anyerr compile flag) or leave it off for 4.0 compatibility. Version 6 4GL is based on some later version of 4.1x (4.12 or something) and should have incorporated this change as well. For the original poster, if you are upgrading your backend to version 5, you can leave your 4GL at the same version as it is currently, or upgrade to 4.1x if you were on 4.0. If you leave your 4GL at the same version, you shouldn't really see any differences at all -- all your old code should work fine. The remaining differences between 4.0 and 4.1x 4GL *should be* just new features (but no guarantees, of course).
