W2K Advanced Server /3GB (ontape not start)
Posted in 2006
A user running IDS 7.31.TD1X3 under SAP R/3 on Windows 2000 Advanced Server with the /3GB boot.ini switch found the engine ran fine, but ontape and oncheck failed with "MapViewOfFileEx: w32ec=487 ... shmat: [22]: operating system error" when SHMVIRTSIZE was set to 1000000. Suggestions included verifying the /3GB configuration per Microsoft KB 283037, lowering SHMVIRTSIZE (e.g. to 800000) and letting SHMADD grow memory in increments, and installing a Windows service pack. None fixed it for the poster, who instead decided to switch from ontape to ON-Bar; no confirmed fix for the ontape error is recorded.

Hi, everybody.
We are running Informix 7.31.TD1X3 and SAP R/3 on it.
We have upgraded to Win 2k Advanced Server in order to bypass
the memory limit of 2GB.
We have made the changes to the boot.ini according to the release
notes to enable up to 3GB of memory.
This works fine, but when SHMVIRTSIZE = 1000000,
we receive the following error when running ontape or oncheck utility:
MapViewOfFileEx: w32ec=487 at \\\\tristarm\\\\oslib\\
t_shm.c:683
00:43:36 shmat: [22]: operating system error
Anybody know, what can I do? May be hotfixes, patches?
With best regards, Yuriy Borinsky

Yuriy,
Based on information at <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283037/en-us>
you need to make sure you have the correct options selected. I haven't
used 7.31.TD1X3 but I would suggest that you look at the release notes
and make sure that it is compatible of going above 2G on windows. You
may also want to look at
<http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/html/29918500.html> to see if the
latest version supports going over the 2G limit on Win NT. Looking at
the module you failed in "nt_shm.c" would point to a failure in memory
allocation of the Windows kind.
Definitely check your configuration using the above MS document.

Yes, I know about this KB article. My boot.ini correct! And more, Informix
release notes said, that my version support 3GB!
Really, Informix is online, SAP R/3 running very well.
Only one bad thing: I can't do backups with ontape and run oncheck's.
Best Regards, Yuriy

Hi,
We have had a similar pro in the past when running a 9.30 32 bit Informix on
Solaris 8.x.
When setting the SHMVIRTSIZE to a value > 800 MB, tape backup was not
possible any more. This was after we bought some memory for the machine and
wanted to give it to the database.
The message was also a shmat error. The solution was to set VIRTSIZE to
800000 and ADDSIZE to 100000 (to not get too many additional segments).
This did not occur in 64bit release (FCxx) any more, if I recall this
correct. (was some time ago)
I believe the cause of your error is the SHMVIRTSIZE. Decreasing it to
800000 is not a big deal (and in case the engine needs more memory, it will
take in steps of 100000).
Hope this helps,
Marcus

Thanks to alll, who responce to my problem.
Now I decide go to using onbar, since ontape had problems with large memory.
As I know onbar is even better for large databases (may use more then one
tape
in backup process and possible to do point-in-time restore).
With best regards, Yuriy
