gbdba asked about the maximum length of table and column names in IDS 7.31. Jonathan Leffler said it is 18 characters for all names and cannot be extended in 7.31, while 9.21 allows names up to 128 characters. Stefan Weideneder added user names are the exception: 8 characters in 7.31 and 28 in 9.21. Answered.

dear readers,
how many characters could be used for the tabname and the columnname in
the IDS 7.31 system?
is it correct, that there can used 18 characters only for the tabname?
exist there a possibility to enhance the size of characters for
tabnames and columns for one database in an instanze of 16 databases?
who knows a helping answer for me?

Yes, 18. And for the column names, and all the other names.

Using 7.31, no. Using 9.21, you can have names up to 128 characters.

... except user names. 7.31 allows 8 characters and 9.21 allows 28.
