One way to get around this problem is to create a |".netrc" file in you home directory. This file should have the |following:machine machin1 login jdoe password jdoe1 | |machine1,jdoe,jdoe1 are just examples use actual data in this place. |This will definitely get you access to the database. Thanks, ramesh (and other quiet respondent). I cannot go with this solution, as per the warning in the MAN page for .netrc - I would have my unencrypted password out in the open. However, I decided to go against reasoning and created a .rhosts file in my home directory, naming the machine and my login ID. (I would have preferred /etc/hosts.equiv but I am not root on this machine.) I can get in now. Of course I still have no idea why this was necessary in this instance and not necessary in the other instance but I have a task to complete and limited time for speculation.
