So what are our long-term goals supposed to be? To not have a family or a normal life? To always worry about if my job will be there tomorrow no matter how productive I've been? To have the back-of-the-mind concern that one small mishap (car accident, broken ankle etc.) will wipe me out financially because the average working professional with a family and a mortgage cannot afford today's health insurance? The above quote seems to be trying to coach these exploitive goals in terms that would make me feel like a freeloader for desiring these benefits. The long term goals of most professionals - all but the most socially inept nerds - is to earn enough money to raise a family and live a decent, normal life. Part of this goal requires relative freedom from certain worries. The professional's chosen craft is merely the means to attain these goals while expanding upon skills already attained. The author of the above quote starts by quoting an unfortunate truth in this country (USA) and uses it as a springboard to tell us not to consider these important "perks" as significant in considering the merits of a job opening. I doubt that a professional who feels insecure would take much satisfaction from such a job or from life. The author of the quote appears to consider such professional satisfaction to be a luxury as well. The qualities so disparaged by the quote surely *are* quite worthy (albeit not the sole) indicators of the value of a job. |The Kelton Group offers technical services ranging from computer |information services to technical documentation and training.
