RE: IDS 8.21 on AIX 5.2 - log of users logging in
Posted in 2010
Larry asked how to find out which users connected to a database on IDS/XPS 8.21 under AIX 5.2. John Miller suggested sysdbopen()/sysdbclose() stored procedures to log connects and disconnects; Art Kagel countered that the server keeps no connection history and that these procedures only exist in 11.x, though Miller and Jonathan Leffler noted they actually originated in XPS, just possibly after 8.21. Art also pointed out AIX only logs logins if UNIX accounting is enabled. Larry checked his 8.21 docs, found no such procedures, and accepted there was no built-in way — no workaround was offered.

Does anyone remember back to IDS 8.21? By default, is there a way to find out which users logged in and accessed the database over a given period of time? I am running on AIX 5.2. If there is a default log on AIX that keeps track of who logs in, that would work as well. Larry
There is a simple way to accomplish this. You can use sysdbopen() and sysdbclose() to track when user connects and disconnects from each database. John F. In looking through the documentation, I did a search on sysdbopen for all of the PDF guides I have and nothing showed up. Can you direct me to somewhere that gives examples of how to use these? Yes. 8.2 is XPS. IDS doesn't track connection history at all in any version. If you have 11.xx you can install a routine to fire when anyone connects that could make such a record for you, but 8.xx doesn't support that either. AIX will only log login/logout data if you have UNIX accounting turned on. Most production systems no long run UNIX accounting. Art Art S. sysdbopen/sysdbclose are not supported in 8.xx, that's an 11.xx feature that first appears in 11.10. Art Art S. Actually to be correct this is most definitely a XPS feature. The IDS feature actually came from XPS. If you look in the latest XPS documentation under. Using sysbdopen( ) and sysdbclose( ) Stored Procedures (XPS). Now I am not sure which version of XPS these were introduced, so they might not be in 8.21. John F. I did not find any reference to the stored procedures in 8.21 so they must have been introduced later.
