OnLine Internals and Performance Questions
Posted in 1997
Greetings:
(Sorry if this seems familiar -- I posted last week but never saw it
arrive ...)
My environment is IFMX 7.20 on a 4 way HP K series system connected
to two HP G class machines. On the G's are up to 600 users running
applications thatneed to talk to the data base via standard IFMX net
connections. At peak times, user performance drops dramatically (what
should take scores of seconds takes scores of minutes). The only
noticable constraint appears to be waits for polling threads. In trying
to fix the problem, the following questions arose:
- The IFMX docs say that MAXCPUVP should not exceed the real number
of processors in the system. However, my CPU's are typically running at
50-65% utilization. Is there really anything that could go wrong if the
number of CPU VP's were greater than physical processors?
- The IFMX docs also say that the number of NET VP's should not
exceed MAX CPUVP. However, again, if I am lacking poll threads, can I
create socket threads with MAXCPUVP CPU VP's and MAXCPUVP NET VP's? THis
would effectively double the number of VP's running socket threads -- but
stay within the letter of the law regarding VP's greater than MAXCPUVP.
- A related question is is it syntactically legal to have lines in
the config file of:
NETTYPE tlitcp,4,200,CPU
NETTYPE tlitcp,4,200,NETWould the second line effectively replace the first? Would they both be
used to instantiate the apprpriate VP's (a total of 8)?
- Another relevant question has to do with the recycling and reuse
policies of scoket threads. Are they released upon disconnect? Are all
threads polled regardless of a connection on the other side? How much of a
performance impact is there on having the number of possible connections
set too high?
Thanks in advance for all of the help.
BTW -- we are looking for good Informix experience people if you
happen to know someone . . .
