Hung Locks

Environment - Informix 4.0 Standard Engine I have a problem which has coincidentally occurred at two of my sites at nearly the same time (different applications and databases). It appears that a table has become locked out of the rest of the world, such that no one can access it in any manner but other tables are OK. An isql ad hoc query against it just displays "Running" forever. Any attempt use isql or 4GL to do anything results in a program that just hangs there as if waiting for a lock to be freed (which will never happen). I used a rather brutish method to clear the situation involving moving around the dat/idx files. I'll spare the details. Is this a known situation, is there a more elegant method of clearing the locks, is it even a locking problem? As far as I know there was no updating or transaction processing occurring on the table at any time when this occurred. It is largely just a validation table. I am interested in anyone's comments.
