Logical Log backup
Posted in 2013
The poster wanted to back up logical logs without running ontape -c continuously, asking whether a once-a-day cron job calling 'ontape -a' would work. Respondents (Marcus Haarmann, Art Kagel, Paul Watson, Khaled Bentebal) all advised against cron and recommended using ALARMPROGRAM instead: set LTAPEDEV to a directory writable by informix, point ALARMPROGRAM at $INFORMIXDIR/etc/alarmprogram.sh (or log_full.sh), enable log backups (BACKUPLOGS=Y) and set BACKUP_CMD to "ontape -a -d" or a wrapper script, so each log is backed up on alarm class 23 when it fills. onmode -wf can set ALARMPROGRAM online. Art warned daily-only log backups risk losing a day's transactions. Resolved with that advice.

I would like to take logical log backup and I have given ontape -c L and it
is taking continuous backup but I would like to run cron job and needs to
complete job if any logical backup. May I use ontape -a L? I need to run
once a day. If in case may be logical logs more after I have taken backup
and how to run this ontap -a L
Thank you very much

Hi,
we are using alarmprogram for such an action. That way, we do not have to
worry about full logs:
First, set the LTAPEDEV to a directory, make sure informix user can write to
the dir.
Modify the alarmprogram to call an external script (like
/mylocation/backup_logs.sh).
BACKUP_CMD="/mylocation/backup_logs.sh"
BACKUPLOGS=Y
In backup_logs.sh, you will get the correct environment
(INFORMIXSERVER/INFORMIXDIR)
and you can then call ontape -a:
#!/bin/bash
export PATH=${PATH}:${INFORMIXDIR}/binLOGNO=$1
(ontape -a -d 2>&1) > /tmp/backup.out.${LOGNO}
This should backup your logs in a file whenever a log file becomes full.
You can analyze the /tmp/backup.out.${LOGNO} file for errors and initiate
a mail to admin in case of any problem.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Marcus Haarmann

It is not a good idea to run the logical log backups using cron. If you do
not want to use cnotinuous log backup (not my favorite either), then use
the ALARMPROGRAM script to do this by capturing condition code 23 (logical
log completed) and lauching an ontape -a from there. The default script is
configured to use onbar to do this but it is normally disabled. You will
have to modify the script to use ontape instead and to enable this feature
or replace the default alarmprogram script with one of your own. Note that
if you use this method it is best to set LTAPEDEV to a directory or
filesystem and let ontape manage the file naming.

Art,
Thank you very much
Yes, I am using file system and modify on LTAPEDEV
Ok, If I don't use cron job, how to logical log backup happen
automatically. It is through ALARMPROGRAM script. Please correct me

Just edit the alarmscript
BACKUPLOGS=N
BACKUP_CMD="ontape -a"
And you should be good

Yes. When a logical log fills and the engine changes to the next log it
issues an alarm class 23 to the ALARMPROGRAM script. If you look in the
script, $INFORMIXDIR/etc/log_full.sh, for event code 23 you will see the
code that currently would execute onbar through the variable BACKUP_CMD.
Just modify that variable to "ontape -a -l" and enable the backups as
someone else detailed.

If you only back up your logical logs once a day, then how will you recover
if the server crashes hard? If it does that shortly before the script
would have run, you will lose a full day's transactions when you restore
your last full archive and cannot roll forward the logical logs to the last
few minutes before the crash. Can your company afford that kind of data
loss?

Failure is not as frightening as regret.
If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid.
What this country needs are more unemployed politicians
HI,
What version of IDS are you using ?
1/ If you are using one of the latest versions: 11 and up, it is best to
use the alarmprogram.sh shell script provided with the product.
It is located in $INFORMIXDIR/etc
You need to modify it a bit because it has been prepared for onbar:
make the following changes to the alarmprogram.sh file:
*BACKUPLOGS=Y
...
BACKUP_CMD="ontape -a -d"*
2/ Change the value of the ALARMPROGRAM in you onconfig file to:
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/alarmprogram.sh
If you have on of the latest versions of IDS, you can use:
*onmode -wf ALARMPROGRAM=$INFORMIXDIR/etc/alarmprogram.sh*
This command will not only activate the alarmprogram.sh while the engine
is running but will update your $ONCONFIG file as well without having to
stop the engine or change the file $ONCONFIG by hand.
Hope that this helps.

Right and you need to be making that log backup every time a log file is
completed.

Hi,
use onmode -l to force a new log. It will trigger the alarm program and backup
the log in case you have setup everything correctly.

Forum Note: Use "Reply" to post a response in the discussion forum.
Either you wait until the currently used log is full or you force it to go to
the next log by issuing the following command:
onmode -l
Then you check using :
onstat -lYou should see the following flags for all of the logs except for the current
one:
U-B--
Make sure that your LTAPEDEV et LTAPESIZE have been set in order for your
backup to perform the save of the logs where you want.

If you need point in time, you need to use onbar instead of ontape.
Ontape can only recover full logs.
In that case you need to set up a lot more things to use onbar and do you have
a third party tool such as TSM or something else.
What version of IDS are you using and what tool are you using to perform your
backups?

In that case you can use Informix Storage Manager(ISM). I believe it
still comes bundled with IDS.Read more about it here
