Let us turn in our hymnal (Informix Guide to SQL Tutorial, 7.2) to page 11-19: "The main use of the CREATE SYNONYM statement is to make it more convenient to refer to tables that are not in the current database." >So, is this a bug? Shouldn't Informix be able to locate my BBB database >from my DBPATH when I use the form database:tablename? It should, but it depends on what you have put in your DBPATH variable. I thought this was pretty simple, but it turns out that there is a 4-page discourse on this topic. I found it in "Informix Guide to SQL Reference, 7.2", starting on page 4-28. There will be a corresponding page number in your 7.x manuals. Synonyms have another advantage, that you can point them to different things at different times, and it is all invisible to your code, and users. This can cause real trouble, too.
