Re: Informix in the News!

Of course merging the code streams was the idea from the get-go (well, actually not all three, as at the get-go there was no IUS). My guess: What you will see is an XPS architecture with IUS extensions. For single machines (i.e. not clusters) it will essentially be a single co-server. Word is with all the various features, XPS on a single node outperforms DSA on the same platform. So such a move only makes sense. The real question in my mind is what the future holds for SE. With OWS (and note that something as simple as a serial number code could be used to limit the server to one cpu vp) more widely available, what does SE bring to the table other than support headaches? I think the other pertinant question is whether or not Informix will maintain its current pricing model for IUS, which essentially makes it UNattractive to anyone but those who absolutely have to have its features. Why charge such a premium for the ability to extend the database (something users have to do for themselves, at their own cost, unless they choose to buy an existing datablade)? I can see charging a pretty penny for good datablades. But not for just basic extensibility. Throw that in for nothing, and let the VARs and resellers and integrators make Informix the database of choice. Then you don't have to charge an arm and a leg, because you'll be selling the stuff like hotcakes! -- Dave "That's just my opinion - I could be wrong." - Dennis Miller Michael Segel wrote in message <3473B9C9.B20@NOSPAM.King.of.MyDomain.NOSPAM.Segel.com>... >David Williams wrote: >> >> Does this mean that SE,Online 5.x,OWS,DSA and Universal Server >> will all be merged into one codestrean. >> >I don't think you will take it that far. > >I think you will see the 5.x disappear, 7.x , 8.x and 9.x >merge. > >> DSA - multi-CPU >> OWS - one CPU - compile time option to disable adding CPU VPs? >> >> Of course XPS will always stand alone as it is very different.. >> >And of course SE will still exist. >So imagine you will have a 10.x code stream.
