Informix gave me the following check list. I assume they have nothing agains me posting it here. May be you want to put it into the FAQ Kerry? I have an installation where even this check list haven't helped me yet. I will post later if I find additions that should be included. Hope it can help you. Also this is for Windows 3.x. There is no version of I-Net/CLI for Windows 95. There is a version for Windows NT that is reported to work on Windows 95 but it is hard to get at. It's included with ESQL/C for NT. There are other suppliers of ODBC that may be better (or worse:(). Dear Informix: This is stupid, stupid, stupid. Can you please tell us when you will do something realy smart with this. With Windows 95 and NT TCP/IP is included. You should be able to make an intelligent installation procedure that makes I-NET and ODBC work out of the box with little or no problems. It should check the TCP/IP installation (all parts of it, including any host/services files needed), test the connection (using telnet or whatever), give detailed descriptions for the 10 or 20 most used Unix servers/OS versions on what to do and so on. In this day and age we as users demand this kind of functionallity and ease of use. Many, perhaps most, of the points in this checklist should be possible to check in your installation program! Tech Info Article #5127 Title: CLIENT (PC) -SERVER CONNECTIVITY CHECKLIST USING I-NET Submittee: tbower Sub. Date: 1994-11-04 Length: 4091 CLIENT (PC) - SERVER CONNECTIVITY CHECKLIST USING INFORMIX-NET The following is a check list to aid in establishing a successful client/server connection from the PC to an Informix Engine. Some items apply to I-Net PC Version 4.10, and some apply to I-Net For Windows Version 5.01 as noted. Protocol is assumed to be tcpip. _______________________PC (client) ___________________________________ 1) Is Share.exe loaded? = (If so, 'rem' it out of autoexec.bat) 2) PC memory/dos = 3) Informix Tool/Ver = 4) Ver of Inet-PC = 5) Protocol Vendor/Ver = 6) What is the Host's IP address & is it in the PC's hosts file? = 7) What is INFORMIXDIR? Is it = set in Informix.ini (5.01) set in autoxec.bat (4.10) 8) Does PATH inlcude $INFORMIXDIR\\bin? = 9) What is DBPATH? = (Necessary for std eng) 10) What is SQLHOST SLQUSER (These variables apply to Inet-PC 4.10 & can be set SLQPASS automatically in the autoexec.bat - in ver 5.01 SQLSERVICE they're set in the informix.ini) 11) What is the Location of the: Host file = Services File = 12) Can you ping the host = by name? = by IP address? = After Loading Windows = 13) FTP PCTCP Variables: (Ver < 3.0) FTP_ETC = PCTCP = 14) What is the host's name? = must be less than 18 chars & visible 15) Is there a carriage return/line feed after the last line in the hosts and services files? 16) Are the port numbers in the services files in numerical order? _________________________________HOST________________________________ 1) Ver/Type of Informix Engine = 2) What is the PC's IP address & is it in the server's host file? = 3) Is the host using NIS? = 4) Are you using a Domain Named Server (still need a valid entry in /etc/hosts) 5) Password Shadowing (y/n) = (not supported under older versions) 6) Is the User's ID in /etc/passwd) = 7) Is the Port # valid in etc/services= 8) Can the host Ping the pc = 9) Is the sqlexecd Deamon started with a /log? = 10) Can user access the Database locally? = 11) Verify Install order (.snfile) = 12) What is $INFORMIXDIR = 13) What is $SQLEXEC = 14) What is $TBCONFIG = 15) Check SQLEXEC/SQLTURBO(permissions) =(should be 6755) 16) Are the port numbers in the services files in numerical order? 17) Is there a carriage return/line feed after the last line in the hosts and services files? *Although, with a domain name server, you do not need the etc/hosts file, Informix products are hard-coded to look in that file to resolve remote machine names. Notes for Inet for Windows Ver 5.01: ------------------------------------ Informix furnishes c:\\informix\\bin\\ilogin.exe which is a trouble-shooting utility. To insure that the correct ldllsqlw.dll is found, make a new program item for ilogin.exe and change it's working directory to c:'informix'dir. The winsock.dll file (furnished by the tcpip vendor) needs to be "winsock 1.1A compatible" (dated AFTER November, 1993) The most common error: 932 getservbyname(WSA_NODATA) Generally means the services file is not being found, and/or the service name can't be resolved. If a valid entry is being made in the sqlexed deamon's log file, the PC has made a successful connection, and the problem more than likely lies on the unix side. If a valid entry is NOT being made in the deamon's log file, set up on the PC is not proper. One last little detail - INet PC 5.01 will not allow access to a DOS SE. If the customer wants to retain this ability they will have to name the LDLLSQLW.DLL file in \\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM back and forth, depending on if they want to access local or remote in that session.
