"/dev/hda3" is a partition but not a raw revice. Raw devices are character devices, /dev/hda3 is a block device. RH7.0 DOES support true raw devices. /etc/sysconfig/rawdevices: -------------------------- # raw device bindings # format: <rawdev> <major> <minor> # <rawdev> <blockdev> # example: /dev/raw/raw1 /dev/sda1 # /dev/raw/raw2 8 5 /dev/raw/raw1 /dev/sda1 And when "/etc/rc.d/init.d/rawdevices" gets run (at startup based upon your runlevel) the specified partition is "bound" to the specified raw device. RH provides this for use with Oracle, but I would ***assume*** that it would work with Informix. I haven't tested this yet, so I'm only quoting documentation and very limited expirimentation (I can tar and untar from the raw partition). The first thing I did was use fdisk to create an 100 MB linux partition (/dev/sdc1) Next I modified /etc/sysconfig/rawdevices to refelect the mapping /dev/raw/raw1 /dev/sdc1 Then I started raw device support up. I ran the raw -qa and all seems to be ok. Then I tried to tar some data to the raw partition using the following command: tar -cvf /dev/raw/raw1 /etc A couple of lines print and then I get an error "tar: /dev/raw/raw1: Cannot write: Invalid argument" I am running the command as root. If I try the tar command using the block device tar -cvf /dev/sdc1 /etc everything is fine. Does anyone have any ideam what might be wrong? I would like to use raw devices for my Informix installation of IIF 9.21.UC1 Thanlks Peter pdiazdeleon@cmpmail.com

Just to check that you could write anything there? What about using dd instead of tar? You don't normally write to raw devices with tar (though, in all honesty, I can't think of a reason why it shouldn't work). > A couple of lines print and then I get an error "tar: /dev/raw/raw1: > Cannot write: Invalid argument" I wonder if you need to specify a block size? I don't know what is a good one to suggest; probably a power of 2, such as 32: tar -cvfb /dev/raw/raw1 32 /etc > I am running the command as root. > > If I try the tar command using the block device > tar -cvf /dev/sdc1 /etc > everything is fine. > > Does anyone have any ideam what might be wrong?
