Hi gurus. Platform : Informix 9.24.UC1 on Solaris 2.6 We are planning how can increase the performance of our storage system and do it more secure. Art, Obnoxio and others say "never use RAID 5 (this message repeat n+1 times) USE RAID 10" but i have a lot of doubts (not about RAID5) about the diference between RAID 0+1 and RAID 10. Can anyone explain this diferences? Thanks in advance. PS Sorry for my poor english. --------------------------------------- Isidre PONS ROCA BASE - Gesti' d'Ingressos Locals (Diputacio de Tarragona) Servei de Sistemes d'Informacio Av President Lluis Companys 12-C 43005 - Tarragona SPAIN Tel # +34 977 236731 Fax # +34 977 227302 http://www.altanet.org ipons@dtgna.altanet.org ---------------------------------------

And what parts of Art's reving didn't you understand? RAID01 (or RAID 0+1) is mirroring two stripe sets while RAID10 (or RAID 1+0) is stripping two or more mirrored pairs. Performance for both is normally equal but recovery and safety are MUCH better for RAID10 than for RAID01. See my anti-RAID5 tome that Obnoxio posted last week or so for details of why RAID10 is superior protection and recovery. Art S. Can you explain the difference in RAID-10 and RAID-01 in more detail. -- Jay Aymond Community Coffee Art S. If you mean the physical differences, it's not that complicated: RAID01 - Take N/2 identical drives and create a stripe set (RAID0), take another N/2 identical drives and create a second stripe set. Now mirror (RAID1) one onto the other and voila, RAID01. See RAID0 first then RAID1 hence RAID01. RAID10 - Take N identical drives 2 at a time and mirror each drive to another, RAID1. Now create a stripe (RAID0) from the N/2 mirrored pairs and voici, RAID10. Get it RAID1 then RAID0 hence RAID10. If you mean the operational differences, I do and I have posted such descriptions, about 4 times a year for several years now. Look in the FAQ, look at the IIUG Archive of this newsgroup (indeed Obnoxio posted a copy about a week or so ago). Bottom line? RAID01 if ANY drive fails on the other side of the mirror while recovering from a crash you are hosed and recovery can take many times longer than for RAID10. For RAID10 recovery is faster, overhead during recovery is lower, 1/N of the throughput reduction during recovery compared to ANY other RAID configuration with as wide a stripe. If you are careful to build your RAID10 with each side of the mirror on a separate power supply and controller from its mirror and selected from a different manufacturer's lot number than its mirror catastrophic data loss is nearly impossible.
