Resource Controls for IDS 11.5 in Solaris 10?
Posted in 2009
V480 Solarius 10 IDS 10.0FC1 (migrating to IDS 11.50FC4) Since we want to migrate to 11.50FC4, I am preparing by reading documentation. In the Machine Notes, it's not clear to me what IBM is actually suggesting I do regarding the resource controls, "process.max- sem-nsems," "project.max-sem-ids," "project.max-shm-memory," and "project.max-shm-ids." In the "old days", I just set the kernel parms in the /etc/system file. Informix supplied the values in the machine notes, and I set them. I think things have changed with resource controls. I gather that I can set these things with the proper Solaris utility, perhaps 'prctl' (although maybe 'prctl' changes do not endure over reboots). Admittedly, I still have to do some homework on Solaris resource controls, but it's not clear to me whether the Informix Machine Notes are directing me to manually set the values indicated, or merely informing me that the indicated values happen automagically and I need do nothing. That's the question: do I need to do something or nothing regarding resource controls (formerly implemented via kernel parms)? We did open a tech support case with IBM, and received some email assistance. It reads, in part: "On Solaris 10, the tunable system configuration parameters have been moved from /etc/system to /etc/project and /etc/user_attr. I don't think any of these affect IDS. All System V IPC facilities are either automatically configured or can be controlled by resource controls. This is OS configuration that I currently don't understand, and should be available from sun..."
