Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
A user new to Informix asked how to create a database user with read/write access, unsure whether to grant DBA, RESOURCE or CONNECT. Jack Parker explained the levels: DBA is full admin, RESOURCE allows creating objects (tables, indexes), and CONNECT just permits connecting, after which the user inherits PUBLIC's rights. The recommended approach: GRANT CONNECT TO <user>, then GRANT SELECT/UPDATE/INSERT/DELETE ON <table> TO <user>, adding AS <owner> if the granting user doesn't own the table. The rest of the thread is banter about the acronym TFM (The Fine Manual).

Up until now, I have been concentrating on the admin side.
I need to make a new user that has read/write for a database. Is that possible
with Informix? From what I reading, I can see that you make a user have DBA,
RESOURCE Or CONNECT.
I think I need my user to have connect.
Can someone confirm this and give me the command to make this in dbaccess?

DBA is full admin rights.
Resource allows them to create objects (tables, indexes)
Connect is they can connect.
Once they are connected, they have all the rights that public has. Or you can
grant them specific rights to specific objects.
So start with:
grant connect to <user>;
grant select on <table> to <user> [as owner]; (if the admin does not own the
table, you might need the as owner - where owner is the table owner)
or - more succintly
grant update, insert, delete on <table> to <user>;
Theres much more to this topic. TFM is your friend.
cheers

We could create some variations around the "F"... but that would also be
"old" ;)

My email works... but I don't check it frequently...
The Fine (or other f word) Manual. Usually TFM comes in the form of RTFM -
Refer to The Fine Manual.

lol .Ok, yes, I spent a day reading up on security. Going to take a bit to
wrap my head around the TFM. A lot to it.
