OS: Red Hat Linux 6.2 IDS For Linux. I created a partition on the hard disk and wanted to give it to IDS, but didn't find the special charater file for the partition, does Red Hat linux support raw device at all? Regards, Carl Y. WU

Not until it ships 2.4 kernel which Caldera is shipping ... a preview version of 2.4. Thanh > > Regards, > Carl Y. WU > > Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Yes, but only "Linux Enterprise Edition for Oracle8i". You could go with SuSe, or wait (months) for 2.4 If you don't _need_ the performance you could use cooked files for now, and convert to raw when your kernel is ready -by that time maybe Informix includes raw in the "we support this" department. Hi Carl, Yes, Red Hat does support Raw I/O. The 2.2.x kernel is already patched with Stephan C. Tweedie's Raw I/O patch. You'll have to read the doc's to activate it. I think you have to use a program called "raw" or similar to "activate" the character devices. However, SGI have taken Stephens patch and modified it to allow more "normal" character device files. Check out this link: http://oss.sgi.com/projects/rawio/ This works with SCSI devices. You just have to apply the patch and re-configure the kernel, answering "Y" to "Support RAW SCSI disk devices". Re-compile the kernel and make some SCSI character device files. Clear as mud? Cheers, Chris. "Carl Y.
