New Era for Unix Dead???
Posted in 1996
I'm having trouble getting a fix on Informix's plans for New Era for the Unix environment. What I've been able to gather is that NE3 is *not* going to be ported to Unix. The official statment from my sales rep is that NE3 is a development platform for Win95 and Win NT. She couldn't get me any info regarding plans to port the new version to Unix. We need some answers to help decide how we will deploy. I've seen a posting that seemed to say that development for Unix platforms would be done on Windows, then compiled on the Unix platform. Does this sound credible? How would this work? Would one just copy over the *.wif, etc. files then do a straight compile? What about version differences? Currently, we are thinking of deploying on the SCO platform (we'd love to deploy on UnixWare instead, but there isn't a port for it, and I can't get the SCO port to run on it). But the SCO version is only NE1. When NE3 comes out, how would I develop on a Win PC with version 3 and compile for the SCO environment with version 1? Thanx. Any help is appreciated. --Cosmo Lee
