Consider it refuted!
At the very least, I'd be more than greatly astonished if that had changed
between the two versions as the lexical analyser and grammars are the same
(identical) for the two versions, so it would take explicit effort on the
part of the maintenance team to make that change.
And, in any case, here's a successful compilation on Solaris 2.5.1 with
I4GL 6.04.UC1:
$ c4gl -V
INFORMIX-4GL Version 6.04.UC1Software Serial Number INF#J081894
$ c4gl -c kk.4gl
$ cat kk.4gl
FUNCTION f()
IF STATUS = NOTFOUND THEN
DISPLAY "not found"
