You can then point to wherever you want your sorting to take place. I also believe it isn't a good idea to use /tmp. I believe informix recommends you specifically create space specifically for temp spaces and furtheremore, designate them as temp spaces. For example, on our system we specifically have (8) 500meg dbspaces designated specifically as temp dbpaces, and they are listed in our onconfig file under the DBSPACETEMP variable. Yesterday, I had to create the eighth space because I also ran out of contiguous temp space when creating an index on a 60million row table. I used onmonitor and marked it as temp on the designated section on the screen. I also had to add this space into the onconfig file as stated above and then take down and reinitialize the engine for the change to take effect. I hope this helps.
