EMERGENCY: I have a down system. I am trying to to a cold restore using
command "ontape -r". The command keeps failing after prompting to back up
the logs. The only error message which appears on the screen is : "oninit:
Fatal error in shared memory creation". Additional error messages are foundin the file online.log which contains the following entries. Please help
tonight if possible.
16:38:51 shmget: [EEXIST][17]: key 52564801: shared memory already exists
16:38:51 Could not create single shared memory segment with resident and
non-resident par
titions. Proceeding to create 2 shared memory segments instead.

Possibly the engine left the shared memory chunks allocated, and now it's trying to allocate them again and of course fasiling because they already exist. The engine attempts to allocate them using a specific key. Either reboot the machine, making sure you block any automatic scripts that attempt to start the engine at boot time, or: 1) Ensure all engines on the machine are stopped, because you don't want any nasty little accidents in the following steps! 2) study existing shm resources with ipcs -m 3) remove any segments with ipcrm also, check for semaphore sets that will show up with ipcs -s
The quickest way to fix this is to reboot your machine. :-)
