Need help with dbschema

We have inherited an Informix project that has lost a lot of the folks that did
the database technical work. Being new to Informix ourselves, we find ourselves
on the short end of some technical problems.
Our current problem is this:
Whenever we attempt to run dbschema -t all -d whatever_database
it fires up and tnen replies with:
System error - invalid statement id received by the sqlexec process
and quits.
Judging by some of the documentation around, somebody has gotten it to
run in the past, but damfino what to do next.
I have tried:
a. RTFM .. says to do what we've been doing. No explanation of errors.
b. running it variously as root, informix, and dba
c. checking permissions ... db directory is 777,
db files 664, group informix
sqlexec 6755 root/informix
d. Cursing, weeping, wailing, & pleading. Blood sacrifices considered.
dbschema announces itself as INFORMIX-SQL ver 2.10.00
We are running on an Intel 320 with Xenix 3.5
Any help greatly appreciated.
