Henry,
dbload (in my version SE 5+, and I suspect in others), which comes bundled
with your Informix db utility, requires an Ascii file.
You'll have to use dd if you have Unix or whatever utilities your system
provides to make the conversion. Watch out for translation of blanks and
nulls. You may want to check the results or segments thereof using hd or
od to reassure yourself that nothing is lost or added in translation.
As for the rest, dbload is very handy and offers numerous features
including error reporting for moving large gobs of data into your tables.
BTW, when you do, be sure to turn logging off; otherwise you may find
system performance beginning to degrade.
