Informix Server & the Blue Screen of Death
Posted in 1999
A user ran Informix IDS 7.3 (7.3TC7) on a dual-CPU Intel NT4 Service Pack 4 box and saw random blue-screen crashes even with no database activity. Replies first suggested the version wasn't certified for SP4 and an upgrade was needed, but the poster confirmed TC7 is certified. Others pointed at hardware, especially faulty memory (suggesting a DOS boot disk with HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:ON as a better test than NT's), and one suggested moving to the buggier SP4's successor, SP5. No confirmation of an actual fix is recorded.

To the best of my knowledge, 7.3 is not certified on sp4 (I think 7.31 is) of course, my knowledge is frequently wrong, so use at your own risk -- I certainly do. I am running (or trying to) version 7.3 on a 2 CPU Intel box with NT4 service pack 4. The machine crashes at random times and in random places, even if there is no database activity going on. So far I've not managed to pin down the cause of the problem, I've searched dejanews but to no avail. The only other site I located running 7.3 on a dual CPU machine has service pack 3 and no problems. If anyone out there has run into the same problem, I'd love to hear from you. David Henry
Only the latest maintenance releases (I think it is TC7+) are certified with SP4. Contact Informix for an upgrade. Art S. I should have been more specific, I am running IDS v7.3TC7 which is certified for service pack 4. In my expirience with many such systems, machine can perfectly well run DOS or WIN95 but would randomly crash running NT. So the first place I would look is hardware, esepcialy memory. Pls note that if memory passes standard tests, it still does not guarantee machine will work ok. Create a bootable DOS diskette using DOS 5.0 or better and copy HIMEM.SYS to it Create a config.sys file with the line DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:ON That will do a better job of testing for bad memory than NT does. -- «««««««««««««««««««««««»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» Milton B. Try upgrading to SP5. Service Pack 4 was full of bugs.Thats the reason, MS had to come out with a new SP without major delay. Upgrading to SP5 should solve all your issues.
