Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
Lee asked what databases Kmart and Wal-Mart use. David Burgess recalled Kmart using Oracle via ODBC from Win-95, long ago. Mark McNary said Wal-Mart's online store used DB2 UDB. Curtis Bennett, a former Wal-Mart employee, said each of 2500+ stores ran Informix 7 on Unix, the home office ran Informix 7 on HP, NCR and AIX, and Teradata served the data warehouse.

What type of database do these companies use? Which company I mean?

The last time I talked to someone from the database shop at K-Mart,
they were using Oracle and connecting to it through Win-95 via
ODBC.
Of course, that's been ages ago, but I can't imagine they'd have found
a reason to change yet....

I know that Wal-Mart is using DB2 UDB for their on-line store. They
made a big deal about at IDUG last year.

I worked for Wal-Mart for 3.5 years. (major hellhole, btw). WM has
over 2500 stores, each with their own Unix server running Informix
version 7. The Home Office has a mixture of legacy mainframe, lots of
Unix running Informix 7 on a mixture of HP, NCR, and very few AIX
machines. I am not aware of any Oracle in the entire shop, although I
think a few teams evaluated it a bit.
And yes, they have Teradata for their data warehouse stuff.
