Every major site I have worked with since 1984 needs simultaneous OLTP and DSS. Some sites live with poor interactive performance and many deadlocks. Others minimize this by doing dirty reads and living with inconsistencies and some deadlocks. Others batch up the updates (they really do want OLTP, but can't do it). Replication seems the best solution I have seen. York has implemented several kinds of replication just for this purpose.
