Locked Files

Every so often I get the error 242: Could not open database table (table_name) 113: ISAM error: The file is locked.even when nobody is working. I would think that somebody killed a program in the middle of a transaction. Unfortunately, I'm not able to tell the users to avoid issuing the kill command because we have a large number of installations all over the country. We are using SE 5.00, 4GL 4.01 and ESQL/COBOL 5.00 and a Unix version with kernel locking (without .lock files). In order to fix the problem, I must copy the files *.dat and *.idx affected with a different name, remove the original ones and then rename the copied files to the original names again.
