Your question is not very easy to answer, because the combination of programming languages and ODBC drivers will offer a wide range of performance, with varying degrees of programming complexity. The most optimal approach is to use a combination of all things. Visual Basic when you need to develop something quickly, and for building your GUI, and C++ when you need higher computational performance on the back-end. Evaluate the tools that come with the PC-based database, and determine which ones give you the flexibility and functionality you need. Some require more SQL programming to view the data, such as Watcom, but they may perform better than other DBs which make accessing your data as easy as using Lotus 1-2-3. (literally). If you are building a client-server environment, you will be able to build a more robust database using a UNIX-based server. Selecting your database should be based not only on capabilities, but also the vendor your select. This is truly an investment, and you may need to go back to the vendor in the future for enhanced software and future revisions. You must feel comfortable dealing with the vendor. Configuring the hardware for UNIX is more straightforward than for an Intel server, because they you have more choices for memory and disk capabilities, and they scale better when your database grows. Trying to support this combination presents administrative issues, but as you can now see, that is much to consider. Good Luck! Mary V. Seger Cap Gemini America 708-531-1300
