Have you lead me astray? :-) Firstly, this *is* a real database, and sorting "several thousand records" should take "a few seconds" at most. But from what I can see of your requirement, my suggestion will work or you can create separate indexes on both columns. Do you perhaps have the SQL you're trying to run?
