IDS-PE or equivalent

We are currently designing a system that will need to be run on both a UNIX server and in "standalone" mode on an WinNT/98/95-based laptop. This is a VB application using ODBC calls to talk to IDS. In order that the standalone version be operable, we need an equivalent to the old IDS-PE. Here's the rub - I still have a copy of IDS-PE that would in all probability suffice for our needs but the issue of support has been raised. I am aware that IDS-PE is an unsupported product, but are there any equivalents out there that have a small footprint (and hopefully a correspondingly small price tag ?). All thoughts, recommendations etc gratefully received (even the Clown's).
