While it's just my opinion but I believe that IBM is trying to cover the SMB space (where a MySQL would also play) with the DB2 UDB Lite version. Yes it's cheaper than regular DB2 UDB but it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of DB2 either. Now if you ask me (a self proclaimed Informix Bigot) which engine is better, easier to use and maintain and could be better leveraged for competition against MySQL I'd push for SE or Online 5.2 (and 4GL, etc.). Several members of the IIUG BoD and several Informix members of IBM's Gold Consulting program have brought this issue up with IBM Senior Management in the past with no or little results. Whether it's time for another go or not...GO. But in reality I don't expect them to push either SE or Online 5.2 into this space, at least not without re-branding to DB2 something.
