Make your 4gl look like the stuff in the "Informix 4GL by Example" book. That's a good common base for all of us. Make your shell scripts look like those in the O'Reilly books. They are well-commented, but not overly so. It's important (I think) to adopt the styles of the current o/s, and not to propagate an inappropriate standard to the newest system. That is, leave the DB2 stuff on the mainframe. In addition to coding practices, update your user interfaces. We are STILL stuck with hideous IBM 36 wanna-be screens, function keys, and user names that were "in accordance with the company standard." The only way we got to move up into the eighty's was to invent a whole new kind of computer group that did not fall under the old I/S umbrella. Welcome to the real world. Make it *your* world! ;) (let me know if anyone wants my $0.02 on shell (more) and 4gl (less) coding standards. I've got a bunch of them!) __________________________________________________________________ | Clem Akins Standard Disclaimers Apply | |Reynolds Metals Co, Alloys Plant "Climb High, Cave Deep!" | | Muscle Shoals, Alabama USA cwakins@leia.alloys.rmc.com | |________________________________________________________________|
