Sure. We use a Bourne shell script which re-directs the output to
a log file, and then runs the tbtape shell. The part you need looks
like this:
$INFORMIXBIN/tbtape -s <<END
0
END
There used to be a copy of my script available at the informix archives.
Due to company copyright policies I can't re-post my new script, though. :(
Some of the things in it are:
verify that there is enough space on the disk for your archive
compare the size of the db with the size of the tape (in
tbconfig) with the size of the actual tape device
pass in the archive level as an argument
email someone if there is an error
check status of significant commands and never leave the database with
no tbtape (it fills up the logs and stops!)
archive to disk, rather than tape
compress and ftp the archives to an off-site location
Some things to watch for are:
Informix doesn't officially support anything but a tape drive
If you exceed the length of the tape (from tbconfig) then you
generate billions of error lines to the stdout of the script
asking for another tape, and fill up its device (another
poster |'d his output to tail -100 to prevent this, though
I haven't)
This looks like advice I'd like everyone to have, so I'm posting as well as
emailing this to you.
Good luck,
