Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.

Sorry people,
I feel like such a user, the manual on the sqlhosts file indicates
that the service binds to the hostname specified... fine.
bright spark here was binding to a hostname which just happened
to reference localhost.
erp. Not too clever. Now I can connect but get -956, the manuals
say check the .rhosts and hosts.equiv... *sigh* My two least fav
files.
Anyways, thanks for the help, the guys who pointed me in the
/etc/hosts file were spot on.
