In /etc/system you are trying to set a variable that the kernel doesn't = know. It wouldn't do any harm, it'll just baffle people. Sorry I don't = know what the correct variable name is but I guess that the sm should be = either shm or sem. Under Solaris 2.5 and above it no longer exists.
