Using Secondary Server in Data-Replication (Informix Workgroup server)

I've made an IDS Workgroup Edition 7.31.UC6A to replicate it's contens to another equal Unix/IDS-instance. Setup is made according "Informix-OnLine Dynamic Server"-book and seems to be ok (both Primary and Secondary Servers are up and operational). Databases in Primary Server are ok and accessible but when i try to connect to databases in Secondary Server I get: 329 Database not found or no system permission How can I use databases in Secondary Server? I understand that they are Read-Only but it seems to be a perfect place to run our heavy reports. Is the DR-feature in practical use somewhere? What are the benefits/drawbacks? Thanks for any comments! Pentti
Hi Pentti ,
We are using HDR currently. It is not a problem. We although only use as a DR
server only. You should be able to run reports on the secondary server.
The only things I can suggest is have you set
$INFORMIXSERVER
$ONCONFIG
Permissions set on DB's , tables , etc which are set on Primary also hold true
for secondary server.
Run onstat -g dri and check state of both servers.
I quite like the HDR set up as it generally looks after it self. Although we
have set the pair up so that if there is a problem we manually switch the
secondary server to primary.
The only down side is the fact that you have a machine which you have to set up
the same as your primary. By this I mean you have to make a copy of all you
executables on the secondary server and if you make a change to code then it has
to put on both servers.
We could take account of this in the code I know but it would mean a lot of
re-development and the powers that be are reluctant to do this.
If you need any more info let me know.
Cheers
Pankaj
