Maybe I should have been more precise: I know that copying .dat and .idx works because I have used it and it works beautifully. But, if there a corrupted index or some other unknown problem exists, then you have the unloaded data and current schema. After editing some of the Informix banner information and dropping the corrupt table or renaming it, you can recreate the flawed table and load it with data -- even if an index has become corrupted or the table for some odd, reason has become unable to be read or will not produce an output from dbschema [that has happened to me and I am glad I had my previous night's schema]. Once the script is written for unloading and dbschema, it only takes a few minutes longer for backup and is well worth the effort.
