Stick a trace file on in the stored procedure :-
CREATE PROCEDURE testproc()
DEFINE i INT; SET DEBUG FILE TO ''/tmp/xx';
TRACE ON;
.....
LET i = test2();
....
TRACE OFF;
END PROCEDURE
and try again.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I got word back from IBM Tech
Support yesterday that our issue is with a known problem. Here's an
excerpt from the email I received:
Bug: 171923 ERROR 1205 IS RETURNED WHEN EXECUTING A PROCEDURE THAT
RECEIVES A DATE ARGUMENT IN A DIFFERENT FORMAT THAN THE ONE SPECIFIED
DURING ITS CREATION
....
You will receive "1205: Invalid month in date". If you recreate the
procedure without the 'WITH RESUME' clause, the procedure executes
fine.

This bug is fixed in 9.40.xC7 and later versions IDS.
I guess it's time to upgrade again.
