RE: Informix and Veritas Netbackup - HELP!
Posted in 1999
I once had problems attempting data restores using Veritas NetBackup (3.1.1)
and onbar.
The messages I received was that the dbspaces were not backed up.
However, I don't have the output from the bar debug file.
So I don't know if my problem relates to yours.
My problem was as follows :
All indications were that the dbspaces were being backed up.
Example ... in the bar activity log and Informix messages file,
the dbspaces were listed as backed up successfully.
It wasn't evident until I attempted a restore, 1 week after the backup,
that some of our dbspaces were not being backed up.
The bar activity log and Veritas "all log entries" from the attempted
restore stated
that the object was never backed up.
Check to see if indeed your dbspaces were backed up :
When NB backups up images, it logs this information into files under
the following directory on the Master Server :
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/images/server/{encrypted date}/{job
class}{encrypted date}_UBAK.f
The unix time stamp on these files is when the dbspace was successfully
backed up.
grep for your dbspaces in the files.
If grep doesn't return your dbspaces, chances are they weren't backed up.
Also check the Netbackup "All log entries".
This report will show 4 important things :
(1) when the backup job for the dbspace was added for the client,
(2) When the backup job for the dbspace was started
(3) When the backup job for the dbspace was beginning to write to tape.
(4) When the backup job for the dbspace was successfully written to tape.
When the problem I mentioned above occurred, the missing dbspace for the
backup
showed as added, but never started/begun nor successfully written.
The problem lasted through 2 or 3 days and disappeared.
Veritas couldn't explain the cause.
This occurred just after we installed 2 patches from Veritas.
So be warned. After applying patches, monitor you backups as closely as
possible.

Subject: Informix and Veritas Netbackup - HELP!
Every night we get a successful backup, or so it says, using Veritas
netbackup to a Sun controlled tape library. I am trying to perform a
"cold restore" and I can't get any of the restores to work. When I run
a backup, weather from the server or the client, the robot moves the
tapes into position and I get messages as each dbspace is saved. When I
try to do a restore, I get NO activity on the library. The onbar
program hangs for about 20 seconds and I get the below message in the
log:
